I should have probably titled this No-Project Blues...but it’s also Project blues!!!
When I tell people that I’m getting paid for doing nothing...90% of the working population will go WOW!!! I should say the same thing to the people on bench.. They’ll say "welcome to the club...another shoulder to cry on"Wasted time for us and wasted Resource for the company. What is my contribution?? When will be skill be harnessed..?? When will I enhance my knowledge..??? And when will I streamline my skills to navigate through the turbulent, choppy, swirling, competitive sea called the IT industry !! So many questions...one clichéd answer...SELF DEVELOPMENT!!!! I detest everyone who tells me this.... “SELF DEVELOPMENT” to me is like baking a cake and eating it myself when nobody else wants to even smell it!!
Getting the customer's requirements in to your head and doing something for him even if the customer is the janitor is more challenging than consoling yourself with “Self Development Work”( so to say). Infinite questions will crop up…you try to get the better of it…………what happens then…… before you know, your problem solving skills have sky rocketed..moreoever the process of "self development- projects /assignments" gets boring after a while because of the feeling..."duh! What’s the point"!
Motto of Desi companies -- "Take people for the heck of it.. and stack them up like in a wholesale cloth shop!" who knows we might need them sometime, next century!!Why don’t they understand that in some of the projects in the same company 2 people are doing the work of 5 people and working on an average of 16 hours!Instead of training the team members/engineers on technologies which are going to be put into use next year...train them on ongoing projects. "Providing employment is not enough Mr Chairman...Provide us work"....pity I can’t strike with charts flashing this message!!
All the youngsters in the present age have the urge to contribute something to the society, to the economy. Daring people like the IITians who started Paritrana take big risks and contribute a great deal. Others want to achieve it through the work they do!
Quality work has been scarce… and demanding it has become felony! Moving up the ladder needs hard work…… “but hey where’s the ladder ??” SOMEONE GIVE US THE LADDER !!!
My company is paying me! Every month I get my Pay check I shouldn’t be complaining,but........apart from my skills being wasted…somewhere inside I feel “I can be more useful to the world, to my community!” and I have to start here, my profession is my pedestal!!
If you have read this much I’m sure you are also on bench ;)) and if your not --- *humph* LUCKY YOU!!! I hope you didn’t feel the slap while reading this..!! though i'm sure you could’ve guessed by now ..its filled with restlessness and frenzy!
I'm back in action after a long Hiatus! And whoa..!! What an outbreak this was!!
PS: never mind about the opening line. ….Only i can fathom that!
